Telepresence Robots Expand Post-Surgical Care Into The Home
Medical telepresence continues to change how patients access health care across the United States. One of the more cutting edge developments in medical video communications has to do with post-operative care. Specifically, Children’s Hospital Boston is now sending telepresence robots home with patients in order to provide follow-up treatment after serious surgical procedures.
The robots, manufactured by a company called Vgo Communications, are designed to provide a direct link between practitioners at Children’s Hospital Boston and recuperating patients – one that eliminates the need for regular return visits to the facility.
As the video above reveals, the robots feature a five-inch telepresence display where a ‘face’ would normally be found, and this interface works in combination with a high definition camera, microphone, and speaker system in order to help doctors and nurses keep in touch with patients at home. This includes not just direct conversations in order to report on recovery, symptoms, and pain, but also the ability to provide high resolution images of surgical wounds in order to track healing and spot any potential problems as early as possible. The robot is not an autonomous device, but one which is remotely controlled by hospital or clinic staff over the same cellular connection that it uses for communications purposes.

Telecom Professional Linkedin Group Roundup – March 2011
Linkedin offers telecommunications professionals the chance to connect with others in their field in order to exchange ideas, make new contacts and explore some of the hot topics that are emerging across the industry. In particular, the Telecom Professionals group has attracted 146,162 members since it was founded in 2007. Linkedin groups are intended to offer more focused discussion and a higher level of personal interaction amongst like-minded individuals on the site, creating an online community that provides a deeper level of insight into a particular industry thanks to significant involvement from its members.
Telecom Professionals group participants make use of the gathering of telecommunications workers, gurus, entrepreneurs and innovators in a number of different ways. Over the course of the last month (March 2011), one of the surging topics of discussion within the group had to do with job opportunities. Not only were a number of group members looking for jobs, but a seemingly equal number of discussion postings advertised open positions. This would appear to indicate that the telecommunications field is rebounding strongly from the economic crisis that paralyzed several sectors of the economy over the past two years. In particular, Erin Ruff of CommScope (@CommScopeERuff), was quite active in posting a broad range of different positions open at the telecommunications company.

Portable Video Conferencing: Cisco Cius and Verizon 4G Network Combine To Offer Mobile Cisco TelePresence
Cisco is making portable video conferencing an important part of its mobile Internet strategy through the introduction of devices like the Cisco Cius Business Tablet. The Cisco Cius is capable of offering Cisco TelePresence interoperability thanks to the inclusion of a 720p HD video-capable seven-inch LCD screen and the ability to connect with next-generation 4G data networks.
The Cisco Cius tablet is specifically designed to enhance Cisco’s Unified Communications Solutions portfolio, and in addition to its Cisco TelePresence capabilities it also offers full 802.11 a/b/g/n Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and 3G / 4G connectivity. Battery life for the Cius is eight hours. The device itself is powered by the Android operating system, which provides access to the Android marketplace of applications, many of which are specifically designed to improve business productivity. Cisco’s own Unified Communications applications that are compatible with the tablet include Cisco Quad, the WebEx Meeting Center, as well as Cisco Presence and Cisco IM.

Mobile Video Conferencing Expands Through Next Generation Smartphones
The idea of mobile video conferencing might seem lifted out of the plot of Star Trek to some, but the movement to bring video communications to devices such as smart phones is well underway. Both the iPhone and Android mobile phones have seen a flurry of internal and third-party software development that has led to some recent interesting breakthroughs in personal mobile video conferencing.
The two greatest limitations to the development of portable video conferencing, hardware and bandwidth, have been in large part overcome by advances in phone and network design. The advent of 3G mobile networks has dramatically improved data transfer speeds to the point where real-time digital video data is finally feasible, and with 4G networks slowly rolling out across the country, mobile video conferencing continues to expand in terms of the quality and features it can offer. At the same time, phone manufacturers have been able to cram ever more powerful chips inside handsets, along with accessories such as miniaturized video cameras that face the mobile device’s user – a critical part of providing a video conferencing experience.
