It’s the first week of 2012, which means it’s the perfect time to take a look back on some of the most popular posts of the past year from the Telepresence & Video Conferencing Blog. Let’s recap the most commented, read, and shared telepresence posts of 2011 and see what trends and interests dominated the industry over the course of the previous 12 months.
10. Use of Video Conferencing Surges Toward Widespread Adoption
This post from September was one of the first that we put together charting the growing evidence that video conferencing was about to reach the tipping point in terms of mass adoption. Driving this trend were the lowered costs of telepresence technology, improvements in mobile video conferencing, and increased interest in having employees telecommute at least one day per week across a wide range of different industries.

How Video Conferencing Provides Savings and Safety to the Penal System

Video conferencing technology is helping to usher in an unprecedented level of safety in the penal and judicial systems. One of the key advantages of telepresence is its ability to provide a communication experience that is akin to participants being in the same room together, regardless of the distance between them. This unique feature is helping to protect the health and security of prisoners, administrators, and law enforcement officers across the country in a number of important ways.
Transporting inmates from one part of a facility to another can be a risky proposition even under tightly controlled circumstances, but introducing an outside element to a jail or prison population (as happens during visits from family members or friends) adds greater volatility to the situation. Some county jails have begun to replace the thick glass barriers that separate inmates from their visitors with video conferencing systems that allow for just as much personal communication between the parties involved while significantly dialing down risk.

Cisco Connected Justice Program A Boon to State and County Judicial Systems
Cisco TelePresence is increasingly making in-roads when it comes to the court and justice systems on both the state and county level. The Cisco Connected Justice program reflects the changing needs of law enforcement and judicial systems struggling to deal with increased case loads and shrinking budgets. Connected Justice is focused on bringing the technological advantages offered by telepresence communications to this unique arena to help make the most of the funding allocated to courts across the country.
Cisco Connected Justice is intended to create a simplified platform for sharing information across the different components that comprise the judicial system. The basis of the Cisco Connected Justice initiative is a secure data network that protects all sensitive information, communication, and testimony in order to ensure the confidentiality of all involved and protect the rights of litigants and defendants. Video communications technology allows for improved collaboration between members of the court both inside and outside the courthouse, especially when consulting with third-party experts. It also enhances the safety of witnesses when dealing with testimony in sensitive cases, and can help to reduce the cost of travel when working with geographically spread-out participants.

Telepresence Adoption Continues to Grow in the Legal Profession
Previously on the KBZ blog, we have touched on the use of telepresence in courtroom situations, but the topic is attracting more attention as the role of video communications in a legal setting continues to expand. Not only is telepresence helping courts to gain access to witnesses without exposing them to the hardship of travel or the risk of harm, but the technology is also starting to reshape the practices of the legal profession itself.
Global competition for elite attorneys has forced many law firms to get creative in attracting and retaining top legal talent. Chief amongst the expectations of lawyers being courted by world class firms is the ability to take advantage of flexible hours in order to achieve a better work-life balance. The reduction in travel time introduced by the adoption of a telepresence solution can go a long way towards achieving this particular perk, especially in the legal professions where consultations have traditionally required extensive time out of the office.

Video Conferencing and the Court System
Much of the focus on video conferencing in the media relates to the efficiencies and opportunities that it offers the business world. Often overlooked, however, is the way that video conferencing and telepresence technologies can play an equally important role in the legal arena.
A recent court case in Indonesia has brought to light how video conferencing can be employed to protect the safety of witnesses compelled to testify in anti-terrorism cases. The threat of violence against individuals who stand up to powerful terrorist leaders is very real, and exposing themselves to danger while traveling to and from the court room is not a risk that all were willing to take. The court, which is located in Jakarta, approved the use of video conferencing as a way for each of the 16 witnesses to testify against the accused without sacrificing the anonymity of their location.
In some Canadian provinces as well, video conferencing is employed as a way to protect the well-being of individuals involved in sensitive cases. Prisoners who are at risk of injury or assassination while being moved, witnesses who face dangers while traveling to and from courts, and judges who face similar problems all benefit from the availability of video conferencing services. These services also reduce the cost of security at court houses and protect the safety of juries, passersby and court personnel from potentially violent actions undertaken in response to controversial cases.
In less extreme examples, video conferencing technology can also help streamline functions of the court and provide faster service to litigants on both sides of an issue. In the U.S., an entire industry has sprung up around video conferencing as a tool for aiding disabled or elderly witnesses give depositions without the burdens of travel. It also helps busy families and individuals gain access to legal resources that they might not have been able to make use of due to work schedules or travel constraints. This improved access to legal consultation and other experts is a serious benefit of video conferencing in the court system.
The business case for the adoption of telepresence solutions is certainly a strong one. It is important to remember, however, that the human element associated with the legal benefits of video conferencing technology offers an equally persuasive illustration of the importance of this type of communications tool.

Unusual Uses of Video Conferencing
Everyone knows video conferencing works well for businesses. Virtual staff meetings, for example, cut the time and cost of bringing geographically dispersed individuals together. But, what about more atypical uses for video conferencing? Cities use it for surveillance, businesses for explaining manufacturing processes to customers, courtrooms for administering tele-justice, and sewer districts to reduce smelly backups.
