How Video Conferencing Professionals Used LinkedIn in December

VideoConferencing Professionals LinkedIn Roundup How Video Conferencing Professionals Used LinkedIn in DecemberThe holiday season often means a slow-down in Internet chatter on LinkedIn, and the Videoconferencing Professionals group was no exception.  That being said, there were still several interesting conversations that took place within the group during the month of December.  Cari Zoch, social media manager at LifeSize Communications (@carizoch), posted a thought-provoking poll asking members what their company’s video conferencing focus would be over the course of the next year.  Mobility was the clear winner, with 23 of 50 respondents marking that as their choice, but cloud services came in second with 14 votes.  Sergio Garcia, manager at Unitronics Comunicaciones, S.A., pointed out that cloud services are going to enable mobile video conferencing adoption as it pushes through to the mainstream in 2012, linking the two most popular choices from the poll.

GIA Report Predicts Strong Global Video Conferencing Growth

Global Video Conferencing Growth 300x138 GIA Report Predicts Strong Global Video Conferencing GrowthA new report on the world video conferencing market has been released by Global Industry Analysts, Inc. The study offers not just an in-depth look at the factors that have lead to the increased adoption of video conferencing technology over the past several years, but also makes several projections concerning where the industry is heading.

The GIA report makes several interesting claims with regards to the factors that have driven a surging interest in video conferencing at both the small business and enterprise level. According to the report’s authors, a key reason for 2010’s spike in video communications sales was a “pent up” desire to implement new cost- and travel-saving plans following their emergence from the previous year’s recession. An increased focus on the advantages of harnessing a mobile workforce also dovetailed with the proliferation of Apple’s FaceTime as well as Skype’s video conferencing software, giving companies the ability to experiment with mobile video conferencing on a low budget before committing to more capable systems from industry leaders such as Cisco.

Cisco Debuts Enterprise Content Delivery System

Video distribution across a large corporate infrastructure can be a challenge for many companies considering the implementation of a video delivery solution.  The new Cisco Enterprise Content Delivery System (ECDS) takes aim at these specific challenges and offers IT administrators an important tool for optimizing video distribution across a wide area network (WAN).

One of the biggest issues facing IT personnel in delivering high quality one-way video connections is managing the high amount of bandwidth that is required for a truly seamless experience.  The Cisco ECDS offers a combination hardware and software solution, specifically consisting of two network appliances (the Cisco Media Delivery Engine 1100 and the Cisco Media Delivery Engine 3100) and the Cisco Wide Area Application Services virtual blade software.  The end result is a distribution system suitable for a wide variety of video needs that’s easy to configure, maintain, and monitor.

Mobile Video Conferencing Expands Through Next Generation Smartphones

The idea of mobile video conferencing might seem lifted out of the plot of Star Trek to some, but the movement to bring video communications to devices such as smart phones is well underway. Both the iPhone and Android mobile phones have seen a flurry of internal and third-party software development that has led to some recent interesting breakthroughs in personal mobile video conferencing.

The two greatest limitations to the development of portable video conferencing, hardware and bandwidth, have been in large part overcome by advances in phone and network design. The advent of 3G mobile networks has dramatically improved data transfer speeds to the point where real-time digital video data is finally feasible, and with 4G networks slowly rolling out across the country, mobile video conferencing continues to expand in terms of the quality and features it can offer. At the same time, phone manufacturers have been able to cram ever more powerful chips inside handsets, along with accessories such as miniaturized video cameras that face the mobile device’s user – a critical part of providing a video conferencing experience.

Apple did a good job providing robust features for its system, but the first iteration of the company’s device was not geared to video conferencing—it does not have a camera.  While the iPad could support one-way video connections, it would not mesh with video conferencing applications.
