Cisco Debuts Enterprise Content Delivery System
Video distribution across a large corporate infrastructure can be a challenge for many companies considering the implementation of a video delivery solution. The new Cisco Enterprise Content Delivery System (ECDS) takes aim at these specific challenges and offers IT administrators an important tool for optimizing video distribution across a wide area network (WAN).
One of the biggest issues facing IT personnel in delivering high quality one-way video connections is managing the high amount of bandwidth that is required for a truly seamless experience. The Cisco ECDS offers a combination hardware and software solution, specifically consisting of two network appliances (the Cisco Media Delivery Engine 1100 and the Cisco Media Delivery Engine 3100) and the Cisco Wide Area Application Services virtual blade software. The end result is a distribution system suitable for a wide variety of video needs that’s easy to configure, maintain, and monitor.

Cisco Digital Sign Technology Leads Global Market
Digital signage is steadily replacing traditional forms of advertising and commercial communication, and Cisco Digital Signs technology is at the forefront of this new wave of consumer outreach. The latest milestone in Cisco’s digital media campaign is the revelation that 3,000 customers are now employing Digital Signs, giving Cisco the lead in global market share.
The news of Cisco’s Digital Signs dominance comes by way of a report from Frost & Sullivan, which takes into account the fact that the company is now operating in 85 countries and a wide range of industries. The universal appeal of Digital Signs technology has helped the Cisco Digital Media Suite division grow rapidly, taking less than four years to go from its initial start-up campaign to leading the market in this critical area. Cisco counts more than half of the world’s top 20 banks, 80 percent of the top five global retailers, and a huge number of educational institutions amongst its digital signage clients.

Cisco Unveils New Telepresence Products at InfoComm 2011
Cisco took the opportunity presented by this past month’s InfoComm 2011 industry gathering to showcase some of the new telepresence products that it is bringing to market. One of the most intriguing new members of the Cisco TelePresence family is the TelePresence MX200 endpoint, which is intended to offer more affordable video communications to a wide range of business customers who are looking for a multi-room telepresence solution.
The TelePresence MX200 is self-configuring and can adjust to a new room in approximately 15 minutes using a simple on-screen setup process. Designed specifically to pull double-duty in both small conference rooms and individual offices, the endpoint’s 42-inch display is capable of full 1080p30 HD video and content sharing, as well as HD surround sound. The concept behind the MX200 is “TelePresence Everywhere,” as the unit is priced so as to make it feasible for companies to deploy multiple endpoints throughout their office space or facility.

Cisco TelePresence Allows ESPN to Bring Fans Closer to Their Heroes
Cisco TelePresence already has a high profile in professional sports, with partnerships between Cisco and the National Hockey League (NHL) and Major League Baseball (MLB) having borne impressive fruit for both fans and sports insiders alike. Cisco recently decided to expand its telepresence reach into the world of college sports, working together with ESPN in order to create a unique telepresence experience for college basketball and football fans.
“Difference Makers: Life Lessons from Paterno and Krzyzewski” was a televised special that linked two of the most respected names in NCAA coaching with their fans. Mike Krzyzewski has coached the Duke Blue Devils basketball team at Duke University since 1980, leading them to four NCAA Championships along with an impressive list of regular season titles and ACC championships. He has also coached at the Olympic level as both an assistant and a head coach. His counterpart on the ESPN special, Joe Paterno, has had an equally hallowed career as a football coach at Penn State University, having been a part of the team’s staff for an incredible 61 seasons.

Telepresence and HD Conferencing Users and Professionals Linkedin Group Roundup – June 2011
Most Popular Discussions for June, 2011
The Telepresence and HD Conferencing Users and Professionals group, sponsored by the Interactive Multimedia & Collaborative Communications Alliance (IMCCA) is not one of the most active Linkedin groups in the industry, but it does benefit from an insightful membership as well as thoughtful discussion topics that make it well worth joining.
David Danto, Director of Emerging Technologies at IMCCA, impressed group members with his comprehensive “View From The Road” coverage of the recent InfoComm 2011 conference that took place in Florida this June. Comments were especially complimentary from those who felt that Danto was able to give them an impression of what it was like to have actually attended the event.
Danto kept the conversational ball rolling in the IMCCA group with his “Question of the Week” postings, which in June included discussion as to whether H.265 will actually be better than H.264 High Profile, as well as continuing debate over whether telepresence is an affordable option for small to medium-sized businesses. The latter topic drew considerable participation, with members such as Bryan Hellard of True View Video (@bryanhellard) offering the opinion that truly immersive telepresence remains an expensive choice for most businesses. This was in direct contrast to posts like the one made by Arie Kooi of Rabobank Rotterdamn (@aakooi), who feels that the initial costs of telepresence are more than made up for in long-term savings, making it a viable business decision at many different levels of market capitalization.

Telepresence Industry Professionals Linkedin Group Roundup – June 2011
Most Popular Discussions for June, 2011
The Telepresence Industry Professionals group had a fairly quiet June, which could indicate that most members are currently in the middle of – or busy planning – their summer vacations. That being said, there were some bright spots of conversation between the members of this Linkedin group who were still actively posting despite the lure of the warmer weather in many parts of the world.
Group manager Howard S. Lichtman, President of Human Productivity Lab (@TelepresenceVTC) started a discussion this past month about the VidyoPanorama multi-screen telepresence room. Linking to an article published by Lichtman’s own Telepresence Options magazine, Lichtman got conversation rolling about the potential for this product to gain wide acceptance in the multi-screen market. Bill Rippon, the Research Technology Area Lead for Voice/Video at IBM (@dirkbjr) expressed interest in this technology becoming more flexible and moving into the multiple meetings space. Ira Weinstein of Wainhouse Research (@WRVideoTeam) and Rodolfo Dávila López of Instituto Costarricense de Electricidad agreed, but cautioned that the Vidyo solution did not constitute true telepresence, but rather a different type of video conferencing option.

Telecom Professionals Linkedin Group Roundup – June 2011
Most Popular Discussions for June, 2011
As in our previous roundups for the Telecom Professionals Linkedin group, job postings made up a significant portion of this past month’s recent online discussion – so much so that after a complaint was made, group moderator Stephen Coates of Occidental Communications helped by explaining how to move job postings to the group’s specific job postings tab.
The rest of June’s most lively discussions centered on a wide variety of different topics. Michael Metcalf, the CEO of Voice Assist (@speechtweet) made an interesting point regarding the role of mobile phones in distracted driving. He posited that people are too addicted to the absolute chatting freedom offered by these devices, and said that legislating their use simply would not work. Instead, he proposed using technologies such as those offered by his company to introduce hands-free voice, text and Internet use while behind the wheel. This provoked group members to post opinions on both sides of the issue, with some claiming that all forms of electronic interaction posed a distraction on the road and others arguing that Bluetooth-style equipment is an acceptable compromise.
